The holidays can be a stressful time for many people. With that being the case, why not give someone – or yourself – the gift of relaxation and well being from Brazos Healing Center.
Brazos Healing Center, located at the College Station Medical Center, offers a wide variety of programs designed to help both the mind and body. Owners Filipa Lechin and Lisa Tauferner opened the center out of a shared dedication to complimentary alternative medical therapies (CAM therapies) in April 2010. In the time since then, the center has become a respected provider of health and wellness services.
Both ladies have a background in holistic and alternative therapies. Taufererner has taught Yoga since 2001 and is certified in both Hantha and Kundalini Yoga. She is also a certified Master Reiki practitioner and teacher. Lechin has a master degree in nursing with a concentration in holistic nursing and is a certified Advanced Holistic Nurse (AHN-BC). She is also a certified Yoga instructor, a certified level 3 Master Usui Reiki practitioner, level 3 Healing Touch practitioner and well versed in guided imagery, aromatherapy and clinical hypnotherapy.
Their CAM therapies are designed to work well in conjunction with the standard medical therapies their clients may be receiving.
"Everything we do is from a perspective of what is going on to create a healthier individual,' Lechin said. "We would never do anything that would take away from what your medical doctor thinks is best for you."
The center recently added Reiki energy therapy to their services, something Tauferner is very excited to offer her clients. Energy therapy is a holistic health/alternative medicine therapy that works with the body’s electromagnetic field to promote wellbeing.
"Energy therapy is one of those things that from the outside looking in doesn’t look like there is a whole lot going on," Tauferner said. "The practitioner may have their hands on a certain spot or just above a certain spot of the body and hold them there for a while. What’s happening though is that energy therapy works on the body’s natural electromagnetic field.
"We know when we feel drained and feel like we don’t have any energy. Usually when that happens we reach for something to take to give us a boost. When you get an energy therapy treatment, I tell people at the very least they are going to feel more relaxed after treatment. If there are any pains like headaches or things like that, you’ll feel those lessen and you’ll feel emotionally better because you are more relaxed and at ease."
Brazos Healing Center also offers Tai Chi and will be doing a special Tai Chi program in the New Year focused on fall prevention. The program is designed for older people who want to learn techniques that will help regain strength, flexibility and balance as a way to prevent falls.
Falls are a leading cause of death for those over the age of 65, something that in many cases can be prevented. By working on the muscles associated with maintaining balance, Tauferner hopes seniors can benefit from the easy-to-follow classes.
"The class should work very well for people in the older population who may be losing their balance a little bit more as they age," Tauferner said. "Also, Tai Chi has been proven to help ease the pain of arthritis and can help anybody with their mobility and flexibility."
Brazos Healing Center gift certificates are good for any of the services offered and make a great present for anyone looking to add a little peace and calm into their lives. Everyday life can be stressful and hectic, and the holidays even more so. Why not take advantage of the gift certificates for yourself as a way to celebrate making it through the holidays.
"I think taking time for yourself is especially appropriate when you’re giving so much to others," Lechin said. "Learning how to take care of yourself and bring yourself a little bit of calm is invaluable."
